Several different representations of the geomagnetic field vector F are in usage. The modern tendency is to give F by its orthogonal components (X, Y, Z). More traditionally F was given in terms of its horizontal and vertical components, H and Z respectively, and its declination D (angle between magnetic North NM and geographic North NG). It is also very useful to introduce the horizontal and vertical vectors H and Z. I is the inclination, the angle between F and the horizontal plane. Note that in Switzerland the vector F points downward. |
